Confectionery shop Jakšić

The small confectionery shop Jakšić is an indispensible part of Zagreb’s dessert scene. This is a place adored by locals who always come back for more, while tourists come with the specific aim of getting the best traditional sweets and desserts. The Jakšić family has been in the confectionery business since 1936 thanks to the current owner’s grandfather.
About

In 1956 grandfather Ivan Jakšić completely took over the shop from master confectioner Kovačić. It has been in the same place ever since, namely, Zagreb’s Zvonimirova Street. The dessert selection is pretty much similar to the time the Jakšić family ventured into the confectionery business.

Owner Sandra Marčič, the granddaughter of Ivan Jakšić, is a member of the third generation and she tries to keep old recipes very much alive by maked loved cakes such as rolls, šaumrole, punch triangles and Dobos torte. Their offer is based on traditional cakes, while among the residents of Zagreb they enjoy the reputation of being the place with the best doughnuts and winter ice cream. The Jakšić family are particulary proud of their desserts harking back to days of yore with their orahnjača (traditional nut roll), strudels and cremeschnitte being the most sought after cakes among locals. Aside from the permanent selection of favourite desserts, they alter their fillings according to the seasonal fruit available at Zagreb’s markets. For a number of years now they’ve been buying cow cottage cheese at the Utrina market, while they themselves hand make everything else ranging from sponge cakes to crusts.

They’re extremely proud of their Sacher cake whose recipe they inherited from their grandfather Ivan. Pinca, doughnuts and leavened dough products are especially popular among the residents of Zagreb, which is why they’re busiest during Easter, Christmas and the carnival. They’ve noticed that foreign tourists are increasingly coming to the shop to try the most delicious traditional cakes. They’re more than eager to point out that tradition is the reason why they’ve managed to survive for such a long time. The walls of this small confectionery shop are adorned with all kinds of recognitions, but they’re particularly proud of winning the flattering best doughnut title in 2015, as selected by the magazine Dobra Hrana.
