The best original presents for our friends from abroad

Autor ZagrebCrafts / Tagovi

Quite a few of us have friends from abroad who we give mostly local products typical of Croatia when they come for a visit.

Considering that a lot of you have experienced this situation, Zagreb Crafts comes to the rescue. We’ve singled out six products that will blow your foreign friends’ minds.

Dominique Jurić – obrt Staklić

Dominique Jurić is an academy-trained painter whose souvenir collection called “Zagreb u staklu” (“Zagreb in Glass”) captivated people’s minds and hearts. She made use of six well-known motifs: Lotrščak Tower, the Stone Gate, lantern, the tram, Šestine umbrella and the old Zagreb advertising column. Aside from traditional motifs, Dominique also makes glass Christmas decorations. Check out all of the pendants here.

Etno butik Mara

Croatians living abroad will have heard of Vesna and Mara Milković. This mother and daughter are preserving traditional heritage by developing their crafts’ unique business philosophy. The Mara Home collection consists of pillowcases and linen embroidered with traditional elements and we’re sure that your friends will fall in love with Baška tablet hems. They make men’s ties containing Glagolitic script elements, which has become a recognisable souvenir right across the world.

Zlatarski obrt Biserke Jakšić

Being a custom-made jewellery designer, Biserka Jakšić is keen to point out her collection “Glagolitic script – a cycle to remember”. As she puts it, the collection tells the story of Croatia’s present as well as tumultuous past. The collection includes pendants shaped as all of the Glagolitic letters and is particularly popular among tourists.

Zlatarnica Bashota

The well-known Croatian family of jewellers has dedicated an entire collection to the Licitar and their offer includes small pendants, broaches, necklaces or earrings in all shapes and sizes. While making their jewellery, the Bashota family used old wooden toys, folk costumes, music instruments and different household items as motifs. This souvenir line inspired by cultural heritage earned them a first prize in 2014 at the Zagorski suvenir triennial. The prize was awarded by expert judges and the audience at the Zagorski suvenir triennial. Browse through the collection here.

Zlatarna Lapidarium

The Nokaj Family makes unique collections that enthral both domestic and foreign visitors. They’ve created the Zlatni licitar (Golden Licitar) souvenir and this is a jewellery collection dedicated to the Licitar Heart as a symbol of love. They point out with pride that their collection has been included in a Japanese guidebook for young people, which is why they have a lot of visitors from the Far East every year.

Paprenjaci

The novel “Zlatarevo zlato” (The Goldsmith’s Gold) written by August Šenoa inspired the founder and owner of Paprenjak to start her own business. This sweet and peppery cookie is one of Zagreb’s most recognisable souvenirs and foreign visitors hold it in high regard. You can purchase paprenjak original, lavender, chocolate, integral and carob.
