A new age of crafts: What can we learn from traditional craftsmen

Autor ZagrebCrafts / Tagovi

Handicraft is making a big comeback. Regardless of the fact that is used to much more appreciated, handicraft has managed to survive to this very day thanks to our hard-working craftsmen. Despite the market being flooded with cheaper Eastern counterparts, Zagreb’s craftsmen and their quality products are still managing to attract customers.

Given that they’re tradesman and artisans in their fields, they cover a wide range of categories which are in demand in the fast-paced craft revolution. More and more creative people are taking different do-it-yourself courses to pursue handicraft and that’s precisely where the crafts’ future lies.

Zagreb’s traditional crafts form an integral part of cultural heritage and we can’t conceive the new age of crafts without them. They’ve been exclusively in the crafts business for generations and by investing in modern machinery and product development, they’re trying to prevent crafts from fading into oblivion.

Some of them, such as Igor Panković who started a blacksmith craft, Svetlana Bursać who specialised in women’s clothes and Spomenka Fabijančić, owner of floral shop Tea, started their crafts as utter autodidacts.

Most of the craftsmen have been bound to their businesses by family tradition for years and they’re increasingly turning towards modernisation to place their handmade products while simultaneously recognising trends in the crafts scene. Franka Vatovac has turned her candlemaking craft into a unique gift webshop where candles make up just a segment of the production, which proved to be a success.

Dora Rubić of fashion salon Dora makes classic coat and raincoat models and has managed to start a praiseworthy cooperation with a British artist whose art adorned their coats, while for years now the jewellery workshop Lapidarium has been working closely with accomplished artists whose collections are placed in the craft. Explore the world of Zagreb’s crafts through the Zagreb Crafts catalogue, pay them a visit and don’t let them fade into oblivion.
